I currently do not have an experience of online college, but since I came from a very small high school I did enroll in online businesses classes. One positive experience I had was the fact that I was able to learn new material that in-class, I wouldn't have been able to. I built a connection with other students from the East Coast and learned much more about what I wouldn't have if I didn't take an online class. Another positive experience was strongly improving on my time management. Many consider graduating high school becoming a part of the "real world", and during my online classes, I had to fit them in to my normal school schedule. This helped me prepare for college as well as obtaining my future online degree.

Though many of these concerns are valid, they vary on a case to case basis. Some have suggested that human/face to face contact is the only way a therapist can truly identify the feelings and behavior of their client. This may be true in some instances over chat therapy, however video therapy eliminates this issue, which in turn eliminates many of the ‘limits of effectiveness’ claim as well. Moreover, people living in rural areas may have spotty Internet connection. There are also some who point to transmission and server problems, an issue we found very little evidence of in our research.

For online counseling programs that are career specific, such as online master's in school counseling or an online master's in mental health counseling, CACREP has "entry-level specialty area" content standards for accreditation. The University of Saint Mary has established itself as one of the tops schools in the Midwest, largely due to their healthcare and science programs. A degree from a non-accredited institution comes with the risk of potentially not being viewed as a real degree by other schools or employers. Many regionally accredited colleges and universities, like state universities, will not accept credits from nationally accredited schools. If you ever want to transfer or get a graduate degree you may have to redo coursework — not fun!

Sometimes it's hard to open up to a counselor in person about sensitive issues. If you've experienced severe trauma, for example, such as sexual assault or domestic violence you might feel vulnerable or scared to reveal your experience to anyone. An online counselor is used to working with clients who are frightened due to trauma. They can help you work through that fear in the privacy of your own home, or anywhere you feel the most comfortable.

In the years since the invention of the first digital computers, computing power and storage capacity have increased exponentially. Personal computers and smartphones put the ability to access, modify, store and share digital media in the hands of billions of people. Many electronic devices, from digital cameras to drones have the ability to create, transmit and view digital media. Combined with the World Wide Web and the Internet, digital media has transformed 21st century society in a way that is frequently compared to the cultural, economic and social impact of the printing press.[2][12] The change has been so rapid and so widespread that it has launched an economic transition from an industrial economy to an information-based economy, creating a new period in human history known as the Information Age or the digital revolution.[2]
