Academic accreditation functions as a seal of quality for online colleges and universities just as it does for traditional on-campus programs. It means that an impartial third-party organization officially recognizes the school as providing reputable programs and degrees. All of the online schools ranked here have regional accreditation. The situation strengthens Uttarakhand’s position at the top of table in the Plate Group, with the team having come into the match with 36 points from six matches. Puducherry had 24 from five coming into this game. Colleges are accredited by either national or regional agencies. Regionally accredited colleges are typically nonprofit and state-operated. Most nationally accredited colleges are for-profit and often have to meet lower academic standards than their regional counterparts. Students considering a nationally accredited online college should research that school's reputation and to understand how academic standards differ from regionally accredited schools.
The value of any ranking list of schools and/or degree programs depends on having a methodologically sound assessment of each school’s/program’s characteristics, especially insofar as these can be objectively measured. A college or university is a complex entity, with numerous factors to consider, and distilling these down to the place where meaningful comparisons can be made to form a defensible ranking list becomes part science and part art.
To a certain degree, online degrees have had a persistent stigma—a reputation that they are not on-par with those earned on-campus. However, the tide seems to be shifting because non-profit colleges (both private and public) have created online programs that rival those traditional degrees. In fact, a recent study shows that 76 percent of academic leaders agree that degrees taught online are equal to their on-campus counterparts.
