"I was ready to give up on finding an online counselor, Jessica was my last try, and she has really been everything I was looking for in a therapist here. I never wait long for a reply, if she won't be able to respond for a day or two she lets me know. It's just incredibly comforting to know your therapist is considering you on that level. I am so pleased with our sessions and progress so far and I'm so glad I tried that one more time."

Online therapy, the digital-age version of counseling services, is a more affordable, convenient and discrete method of receiving therapy. Several years ago, a few pioneers saw a large opportunity in the mental health industry. They noticed that millions of people were living without access to professional help. They also understood that physical services were being replaced with digital alternatives that can save time for customers. These innovators decided to create online therapy platforms, which essentially connect licensed psychologists and people suffering from mental health issues such as depression, stress and anxiety, among dozens of other clinically defined disorders. While the online therapy industry is still in its early years, as it currently stands, there is no shortage of online therapy providers available to people looking for professional help. There are close to a dozen services, each offering its own unique set of features that appeal to the needs of different types of patients. The number of providers will only grow as the demand increases over time. Therefore, we have evaluated each of the major online therapy brands, outlining all of the pertinent information one needs to make an informed decision.

Now you have dozens or sometimes hundreds of options to choose from when looking to get your degree.”

As a seasoned mental health care provider, I was skeptical of video therapy at first. Now that I have engaged in the process for several years, I’ve had a change of heart. I see people can still be in the “here and now.” They can be vulnerable, and I can receive it. The creation of emotional intimacy is not only possible, but at times it is surprisingly easy. Some of the people I’ve worked with, in fact, have told me they would not have been able to share some of the things they expressed if I were sitting across from them. Being one step removed, then, helped create a safer space for them.

Since the beginning of the internet in 1972, several creative people perceived the potential of the internet for the therapeutic communication. In 1972, computers from Stanford and UCLA simulated a psychotherapy session that was considered the very beginning of online counseling.[3] At the time the internet went public, this launch went hand in hand with the development of the first self-help groups on the internet who were, in that time, very popular. In 1995, Martha Ainsworth had a couple of psychological complaints where she wanted to get rid of it, so she began searching for a competent therapist. Because her travel requirements made it difficult for her to consult a face-to-face therapist, she searched for an effective alternative online, but only found a dozen webpages that offered online treatment for psychological complaints. Afterwards, Martha Ainsworth wanted to reach the general public with her experiences and founded a sort of clearinghouse for mental health websites, named Metanoia. This database seemed to be a very efficient store-room and by the year 2000, this clearinghouse contained over 250 websites of private practices, and more than 700 online clinics where a therapist could be contacted.[4]
Founded in 1870, Missouri University of Science and Technology was one of the earliest technological post-secondary schools built west of the Mississippi. The distance degree program at Missouri S&T offers 17 graduate degrees and more than 50 graduate certificate programs. Graduate degrees require 10 courses or 30 course hours for completion. Graduate certificate requirements are comprised of four courses for a total of 12 credit hours.
The transition has created some uncertainty about definitions. Digital media, new media, multimedia, and similar terms all have a relationship to both the engineering innovations and cultural impact of digital media.[13] The blending of digital media with other media, and with cultural and social factors, is sometimes known as new media or "the new media."[14] Similarly, digital media seems to demand a new set of communications skills, called transliteracy, media literacy, or digital literacy.[15] These skills include not only the ability to read and write—traditional literacy—but the ability to navigate the Internet, evaluate sources , and create digital content.[16] The idea that we are moving toward a fully digital, paperless society is accompanied by the fear that we may soon—or currently—be facing a digital dark age, in which older media are no longer accessible on modern devices or using modern methods of scholarship.[3] Digital media has a significant, wide-ranging and complex effect on society and culture.[2]
