Distance learning has a wide appeal to a diverse population of Americans. It offers students a number of advantages, many of which dovetail with other social or lifestyle needs. Online courses and degree programs suit working professionals who are looking to move up to management roles, often with their employers paying part or all of their tuition. It’s a powerful option for stay-at-home parents who are preparing for a new or re-entry career when they head back to work. Pearson Learning Solutions Senior VP Todd Hitchcock reports:
For many online students, their graduation date marks the first time they set foot on their school's campus. Online students are often invited to participate in cap-and-gown ceremonies with on-campus graduates, where they receive their official diploma. Smaller ceremonies may be held to honor online graduates in specific programs. Some online colleges hold live-streamed commencement ceremonies and will mail diplomas to each graduate at a later date.

The workplace is changing. Digital media and data are everywhere. The world is social. If you’re no longer in your twenties but want to get into a digital role, you may find it hard to find peers to interact with at traditional schools. That’s where an online degree program can be particularly helpful. In a virtual setting, you’re more likely to be valued for your contribution, and not judged on age or other less relevant qualities. “Older students are able to attend school with more of their peers and have interaction with students and instructors that are related to their experience,” says Leatherwood.
In addition to this, MyTherapist initially garnered much attention by offering therapy on a cost per session basis (rather than ‘unlimited’ therapy). This certainly contributed to their rise among the best online therapy services. However, the ‘unlimited’ plan has become too enticing for most people looking for counseling. As such, MyTherapist has since changed their pricing model to this model.
All schools included above were required to offer at least 10 online degrees. Remember: You are the consumer. You are buying a service. If you don’t want to immediately schedule another appointment, that is just fine! If you feel you need to contemplate the experience before making another appointment, trust your gut and do so. You don’t have to purchase a car simply because you take it out for a test drive, and you don’t have to continue with a counselor just because you had a session with them.

When it comes to what employers want to see in a resume, you may be surprised. Certainly they want to see the standard bits of information, such as education, job history, and training. This means they’re also looking at information such as results, relevance, signs of motivation, and an indication that you have a genuine interest in the company and position.

There are numerous reasons and a multitude of benefits that come along with an online degree compared to a traditional degree but the ones that stand out most would be the professors and the time and scheduling. At first I was wary of online professors and how they would stack up compared to in-person professors. To my surprise, at the University of Florida, some of the same professors that were in-person also taught online. This means that you know you are getting top quality teaching at a pace you enjoy as well as the amount of hours you want to put into a class rather than spending upwards of 3-4 hours in a small classroom. You are able to time out and schedule around your life as you please which has been the biggest blessing of my life.
