One in three U.S. college students is now taking at least one class online, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Many leaders in education predict digital learning will become even more of an everyday experience for college students and recommend that high schools require students to take one online course before graduation, a requirement many high schools have already adopted.

Bachelor's degree programs for online undergrads are primarily compartmentalized in two broad areas of academic study: business and science. Other undergraduate options include degrees in specialized fields like tribal administration and governance, sports and recreation management and social work. All 20 online bachelor's degrees offered through UM-Twin Cities consist of 120 credit hours, and are designed to be completed after four years of full-time enrollment. Sixteen are delivered in a fully online format and four are partially online. Undergraduates can also earn fully online certificates in the following fields: applied business; autism spectrum disorders; business administration; finance; manufacturing management; and taxation.

Though many of these concerns are valid, they vary on a case to case basis. Some have suggested that human/face to face contact is the only way a therapist can truly identify the feelings and behavior of their client. This may be true in some instances over chat therapy, however video therapy eliminates this issue, which in turn eliminates many of the ‘limits of effectiveness’ claim as well. Moreover, people living in rural areas may have spotty Internet connection. There are also some who point to transmission and server problems, an issue we found very little evidence of in our research.

Online education breaks down barriers to physical or geographic limits. If you’re in a rural community, for example, you get access to the same world of online options as you would in a city. “10-20 years ago, if you wanted to finish school or get an advanced degree, chances are your options were one of the handful of local schools,” says Dale Leatherwood, Co-Founder of ClearDegree, which helps working professionals research online education. “If they didn’t offer the program that you wanted, you were out of luck. Now you have dozens or sometimes hundreds of options to choose from when looking to get your degree.”

The transition has created some uncertainty about definitions. Digital media, new media, multimedia, and similar terms all have a relationship to both the engineering innovations and cultural impact of digital media.[13] The blending of digital media with other media, and with cultural and social factors, is sometimes known as new media or "the new media."[14] Similarly, digital media seems to demand a new set of communications skills, called transliteracy, media literacy, or digital literacy.[15] These skills include not only the ability to read and write—traditional literacy—but the ability to navigate the Internet, evaluate sources , and create digital content.[16] The idea that we are moving toward a fully digital, paperless society is accompanied by the fear that we may soon—or currently—be facing a digital dark age, in which older media are no longer accessible on modern devices or using modern methods of scholarship.[3] Digital media has a significant, wide-ranging and complex effect on society and culture.[2]
